IoTech’s Smart Weather Station Enhances Environmental Monitoring at Bournemouth Beach
Bournemouth, UK – IoTech has installed the UK’s first 9-in-1 smart weather station at Boscombe Seafront, marking a significant advancement in environmental monitoring as part of BCP Council’s “Smart Place” initiative. This cutting-edge technology, leveraging LoRaWAN for data transmission, plays a crucial role in the “Bathing Water Quality” project, aimed at monitoring water quality and offering a model for coastal councils across the UK.

Addressing Water Quality Challenges
Boscombe Beach, a popular destination for locals and tourists, benefits greatly from ongoing efforts to ensure high water quality standards. The installation of a smart IoT weather station will enable real-time data collection and analysis, providing critical insights into water conditions. This technology helps detect pollutants and track changes over time. Continuous monitoring ensures that water quality remains high, safeguarding public health and enhancing the beach experience for everyone.
IoTech’s Key Contribution
The 9-in-1 Compact Weather Sensor installed by IoTech measures nine important environmental factors: air temperature, humidity, air pressure, light, rainfall, pollution, PM2.5, PM10, wind speed, and wind direction. PM2.5 and PM10 are tiny particles in the air that help us understand air quality and it’s impact on our health. Using LoRaWAN technology, which is a communications protocol meaning ‘Long Range Wide Area Network’ enables reliable, long-distance data transmission, the weather station provides real-time environmental data essential for effective water quality monitoring.

Enhancing Monitoring and Public Access
The “Bathing Water Quality” project, funded by the Towns Fund and awarded to UnifAI Technology, aims to develop an AI/ML-based system for real-time water quality monitoring and prediction. IoTech’s weather station feeds essential data into this system, improving its accuracy and reliability. This data will be available on an online dashboard and app for BCP Council and the general public, allowing the public to make informed decisions about water safety before swimming.
Setting a New Standard
This collaboration between BCP Council’s Smart Place team, IoTech, Wessex Water, Iknaia and UnifAI Technology sets a new benchmark in environmental monitoring and public health protection. As the system becomes fully operational, it will offer beachgoers at Boscombe Beach enhanced visibility and accuracy regarding water quality.
IoTech hopes this successful initiative will inspire other coastal local authorities to adopt similar innovative technologies for enhanced water quality monitoring and environmental stewardship.
